The Nationalist Party is backing the Vote16 committee that is holding discussions on giving 16-year-olds the right to vote in local council elections.

In May, the Government launched a campaign aimed at bringing down the voting age to 16 at these elections, and planned to have the necessary legislation in place before November.

The campaign Vote16 had been announced as part of the European Youth Week activities.

Yesterday, the committee, headed by Michael Cohen, met Nationalist Party leader Simon Busuttil and spokesman for youth Robert Cutajar.

Dr Busuttil said Vote16 was one of the party’s electoral proposals, which included the right to contest the elections.
