Shadow Minister for Home Affairs Jason Azzopardi yesterday accused the government of throwing Malta back to the 1980s by refusing to answer pertinent questions on the pretext that they were “not in the public interest”.

Minister Emanuel Mallia agreed, pointing out that under Nationalist adminis-trations sensitive minutes were given a full airing, “against all sensible procedure”.

It all started when Dr Azzopardi asked if Dr Mallia could lay on the table of the House the minutes of all meetings held between the Police Commissioner and the Malta Police Association on the setting up of a house union for members of the corps.

The minister said the questioner should know that such information was not of a public nature.

Dr Azzopardi contested the minister’s reply, saying that Dr Mallia could not give the details because there had not been one such meeting between March and June 2013.

Dr Mallia insisted that meetings there had been, some even including the Permanent Secretary.
