Santo Cassar, known as Santu or Santi, is the only policeman in Gozo to have been murdered while on duty. This happened in Żebbuġ, Gozo, on August 1, 1914, nearly 100 years ago.

While on patrol duty in the main village square near the police station, constable 201 was shot by an unknown assailant.

Last month I contacted Eddie Attard, author of Delitti f’Malta 200 Sena ta’ Omiċidji 1800-2000, who informed that a petition for a marble plaque to be placed on the police station to commemorate this anniversary seems to have been accepted.

I look forward to this commemoration in Żebbuġ next August.
