A second-half own goal by Jason Gorskie damaged Pietà Hotspurs’ aspirations of finishing third in the table and making it to the play-off for a Premier League spot after going down to Lija Athletic.
The result left Senglea firmly in the driving seat to secure third spot as they are four points clear of the Hotspurs in the standings.
Lija took control early on with Adrian Caruana hitting wide while Adeshina Ige headed into the hands of goalkeeper Miguel Montfort.
Pietà threatened on 33 minutes as Neil Pace Cocks fired high and wide.
Lija netted the winner on 54 minutes when from a Michael Borg corner kick, the ball hit Gorskie and rolled into the net.
The Hotspurs pushed more men forward but the closest they came was on 77 minutes when John Emeka headed wide from a corner.

St George’s scored two second-half goals to surprise Żebbuġ Rangers and keep alive their hopes of avoiding the drop.
The Saints have now moved just four points adrift of fourth-from-bottom Melita.
The match was devoid of scoring chances in the first half but improved considerably on the restart as St George’s hit a quick-fire double.
On 56 minutes Idahosa Uwadia headed in Dylan Sammut’s cross.
The Saints put the game to bed on 69 minutes when Lucky Omeruo hit a fine strike that flew into the net.
