Maltese voters living abroad should vote at their respective embassies like other established democracies, Alternattiva Demokratika said yesterday.
The electoral commission should ensure that polling booths are set up in Maltese embassies in European capitals to ensure all Maltese citizens can exert their legitimate right as citizens, said AD spokesman on International Affairs Arnold Cassola.
This was more urgent in view of the Air Malta chairman’s “reasonable declaration” that the airline cannot afford to foot the bill for cheap flights to Malta for the next general election.
Hundreds of Maltese voters living overseas normally take advantage of the cheap flights offered by Air Malta specifically for the general election, a system long criticised by many as unfair and unfeasible.
AD chairman Michael Briguglio said it is about time Malta’s electoral process adopted methods similar to those of established democracies.
