As someone who visits Malta frequently I must write to support the correspondent who wrote about the alarming increase of traffic on the Maltese roads and the increasing hazards of driving on this island.

It is difficult to see how this problem can be dealt with, especially if the traffic grows even further. One possible solution that occurs to me is the solution chosen by London in the development of an underground train network and I wonder whether this has been given consideration at government level here.

The comparative softness of Malta’s limestone should make it feasible, although clearly detailed geological studies would need to be done. If it is feasible, some of the problems caused by having to build roads round Malta’s many sea inlets might make travel between destinations considerably shorter and, in the more distant future and geology allowing, it might even be possible to include Comino and Gozo in such a system.

Have there been any serious studies? It would, of course, be very expensive but the EU should be willing to help. And if not this solution, have any Maltese governments come up with a better one? It is too urgent to be left to divine intervention.
