I wonder if we have a government with enough courage to solve our appalling traffic problems in the way that Singapore (another relatively small island State, but with three million inhabitants) did.

They passed a law which said cars may only be used on alternate days: Monday, Wednesday Friday one week; Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday the following week. On non-car days, vehicles were to be shared with neighbours, colleagues and friends or public transport used. Heavy goods vehicles were given restricted times.

Of course, this created a furore when first introduced but when the public found they were getting to work in a quarter of the time and that parking was easy, they quickly accepted.

This situation gave the government breathing space to improve the infrastructure, road networks, and develop the world’s best underground system (perhaps a monorail in Malta?) and bus service.

Having developed the infrastructure, regulations were eased, though there are still limitations in busy areas.

As said above, it needs a courageous government to resist a car driving culture.
