The Peace Lab in Ħal Far is undergoing thorough restoration and refurbishment due to the extensive damage the pre-war buildings sustained over the years.
The estimated cost of works on the Peace Sanctuary, the central chapel of the complex, is €46,000. The chapel restoration is part of a wider project that involves maintenance and renovation of the educational and cultural facilities as well as accommodation for asylum seekers.
Originally, the Peace Lab formed part of the Ħal Far airfield, which witnessed intensive air combat during World War II but the change from a war station to a centre for peace was not just a symbolic gesture. It was direct action for the promotion of mutual understanding and has been a centre of prayer, education and encounter for the last 40 years, it said.
The restoration job involves structural interventions while preserving the original features and materials. Great care is being taken to preserve in their original state the extensive wall murals.
The interior decoration and lighting system have been redesigned to enhance the distinctive features of the chapel and to better cater for its various functional aspects.
The Peace Lab is active in a range of initiatives, including interfaith and intercultural education, environmental issues and social work. For funding, it relies on voluntary work and contributions as well as fundraising activities.
