Malta International Airport assured the Government that should it decide to outsource airport attendants services it would ensure employees’ interests were safeguarded and would not impose forced redundancies.

In a statement yesterday, the Finance Ministry said the Government, as a minor shareholder in MIA, was taking note of the controversy that arose over the possibility that the airport company would start outsourcing the service.

The ministry said that during a meeting with Finance Minister Tonio Fenech, the company said it was in the initial stages of evaluating how the service could be made more efficient. It had informed the trade union representing employees about such evaluations.

At this stage, MIA was considering various options, ranging from changes in work practices and keeping its own employees to some form of outsourcing, the ministry said.
