The number of persons registering for work in August dropped by 759 over the corresponding month last year and stood at 6,698, the National Statistics Office said yesterday.

In a statement the government noted that August’s unemployment rate was the lowest since July 2012 and that the number of jobless people had decreased by nearly 1,100 since January.

The Nationalist Party said the figures confirmed that an average of 10 people a day were employed with the civil service in the first 13 months of the Labour government.

The NSO said a drop in unemployment was recorded among all age-groups, with the most significant decline among those aged 45 and over.

It was also announced that the registered unemployed rate for April stood at 4.3 per cent of the labour supply, down by 0.1 per cent over the corresponding month of last year.
