If the sight of a statue of Christ at the National Aquarium in Qawra provoked a slight displeasure or subtle protest for Karl Consiglio, he must be leading a very miserable life indeed in his native country.

The streets and squares of Malta are peppered with images and niches of saints.

If he roams in the countryside he cannot fail to notice the belfries and domes of the parish churches.

If he is awake after sunset in summer he can see whole villages en fete with fireworks lighting up the skies with accompanying bells, smells, illuminations, band marches, street decorations and so on.

These niceties remind me of a Supreme Being and, whether sacredly or profanely relished or detested, they are part and parcel of our culture. Whether Consiglio likes them or not, is a moot point.

However, if we find ourselves with a desire that nothing in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that we were made for another world – C.S. Lewis (an atheist convert)
