The opposition has proposed a parliamentary debate on the eurozone crisis before the House rises for the summer recess.

Opposition finance spokesman Karmenu Vella and economic development spokesman Charles Mangion made their request in a letter to Finance Minister Tonio Fenech, with whom, they said, they had already had an informal meeting on the issue.

The motion, which did not see a vote, was later tabled during a meeting of the House Business Committee by Labour deputy leader for parliamentary affairs Anġlu Farrugia.

The letter suggested a comprehensive debate on this present situation and how it might develop in the future as well as its effects on the country. This would enable taxpayers to be made aware of the government’s position within the Council of Ministers and other EU and eurozone organs.

They said the debate should clarify the government’s position on several related matters, in such a way that there would be the most transparent use of public funds and other guarantees binding the country in the foreseeable future.
