An e-commerce strategy will be launched for consultation today, aiming to expand the sector and identify new opportunities for local businesses.

Parliamentary Secretary for Competitiveness José Herrera said yesterday that the document would build on Malta’s Digital Strategy.

He was speaking during a full-day conference in Italy, titled ‘Venice declaration for a more digital Union’, chaired by Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi.

The declaration aims to boost the EU’s competitiveness and add more than €2,000 billion to Europe’s GDP by 2030.

Another aim of Malta’s e-commerce strategy is to penetrate foreign and niche markets and identify opportunities in order to attract business activity within the sector’s global market, Dr Herrera said.

Dr Herrera stressed that Malta was playing a role to become a champion in digital technology.

“The digital strategy launched some time ago paved the way forward.

“Now we are in a phase to implement the strategy for the benefit of our citizens,” he said.
