Reference is made to the article Geologist Questions Timing Of New Oil Exploration Call (September 5) and to the leader Account On Oil Exploration Is Long Overdue (September 6). It must be pointed out that the government had publicly announced that it will be working on an oil exploration promotional presentation in March 2010, hence much prior to the popular uprisings in Northern Africa.

This confirms that the timing of the presentation and the discussions with the Libyan transitional government were purely coincidental.

Malta has always continued with its exploration efforts while at the same time discussions with neighbouring countries have been ongoing to resolve boundary issues.

With regard to the doubts raised on the companies that have been entrusted with drilling Malta’s wells, it is important to note that all wells drilled in Maltese acreage have been done by reputable oil companies, each having a team of experts in the field.

With regard to the assertion about the current set-up of the oil exploration unit, it must be pointed out that this department is now amalgamated with the Malta Resources Authority and so far MRA has not received any adverse comments about the data from the several oil companies that visited the data room.

While appreciating the interest that such a subject generates, the public and the media must also appreciate the sensitivity of the ongoing diplomatic efforts as regards oil exploration. In the national interest the government had adopted a prudent approach thereby limiting regular disclosures on the issue.

The government remains committed to further discussions on the issue of oil exploration with Libya without any delays, however, it also appreciates the hardships currently being faced by the Libyan population.

It also understands that the transitional Libyan government has basic and urgent necessities to look after and, hence, it has no plans to impose its urgency on this issue out of respect to the Libyan people, first and foremost.
