Adrian Muscat (The Sunday Times, September 23) wrote that one-way systems increase circulation, queues and pollution.

I beg to differ completely with his view as, in my opinion, the one and only solution which reduces congestion, queues and above all pollution is the introduction of one-way systems.

This guarantees that traffic will flow freely and reduces the risk of collisions and road rage. As the majority of streets in Sliema are in fact already one-way, I cannot foresee any problem should those that aren’t, with the exception of Sir Adrian Dingli and the roads running along the coast, are turned into one-way streets too. It is relevant to highlight that some years ago this matter had been discussed at length by a ‘working group’ set up by the Sliema local council. Discussions were subsequently held with the then Malta Transport Authority, however a decision was never taken.

I hope that this time round the council sees this matter through to conclusion without any further uncalled for delays from either side.
