The first rains have finally hit the Maltese islands. One of the most popular spots is Chadwick Lakes. However, visitors there last weekend were left disappointed and with a sour taste. The valley bed had not been cleaned and the water held within the dams was not only murky but full of discarded plastic bottles and other debris. The neighbouring countryside was also scarred. Garbage was strewn in the grass and fields, including a mattress.

No eternal flame

The eternal flame at the War Memorial in Floriana was temporarily extinguished at the wrong time... exactly when Malta joined the rest of the world to remember the war dead. Those in charge of the monument should be ashamed of themselves and inform the public what happened. More respect should be shown to those who lost their lives to save us.

A danger to others

Boys waiting for school transport near the former Vodafone premises on the Birkirkara bypass should know better than to play football there. Drivers coming onto the roundabout on Friday morning were shocked to see a student running after a stray ball and kicking it back to his friends.

Piggy in the middle

This traffic island on the road leading to Għajn Tuffieħa was reported a few weeks ago, having been in this state for some three years. Only a few days after it was fixed it was hit again by some bus or truck. Big vehicles have difficulty manoeuvring the turn towards Mġarr. Therefore, the centre strip needs to be pushed back a couple of metres. Do we have routine live road inspections in this country? How is it possible that no one notices this? Shame.

Third World revisited

Ġnien l-Għarusa tal-Mosta, in Mosta, is full of rubbish and evidently needs to be regularly cleaned by the local council. The area is increasingly looking like a Third World country despite the breathtaking views.
