The Lascaris War Rooms, in Valletta, ought to be one of the main attractions in the capital city. However, the area situated just outside their main entrance needs to be spruced up immediately and made a bit more welcoming.

Health hazard

The patch beneath the trees in St James Ditch, Valletta, just behind the building where the VAT lottery is drawn, cries out for a clean-up.

Two containers used during restoration works have been removed but broken chairs and pipes remain, adding to the litter.

Lack of ATMs

A café owner in Vittoriosa who does not take cards as his sales tend to be of low value informed a patron that the nearest ATM was in Cospicua. Vittoriosa, Senglea and Kalkara, all major tourist areas, are without this basic facility.

Missed the bus

The press reported last week that the police chased a route bus following a ‘kidnapping’ report but they failed to apprehend the alleged ‘perpetrator/s’.

How could they in a tiny island like Malta? Since it appears that the tip-off came from a passenger on board the same bus, was it that difficult to get in touch with the driver via mobile phone and ask him to slow down until the police caught up with him?

The incident certainly does not say much for the tracking capabilities of the police.

Doctor in the house

The Parliamentary Secretary for Justice Owen Bonnici was last week quoted as saying: “Other students completing five-year courses, such as dentists, still style themselves as doctors.

“I have no problem with following this precedent.”

He was speaking in relation to law students? Surely the hon-ourable gentleman, a lawyer, realises that carrying the title of doctor should not be one of style but of substance!

Abandoned vehicle

This Mazda 323F has been abandoned for well over a year at the entrance/exit of the garage complex underneath the government housing estate in Triq Pietru D’Armenia, Pembroke.

It is obviously not wanted, with all four tyres deflated, a smashed window and a couple of ‘final notice’ notifications stuck to it.

Numerous reports were filed with the Housing Authority and the Pembroke local council but no concrete action has ever taken place.

Some months ago, residents received a letter saying the area would undergo a massive clean-up (including of abandoned vehicles) but for some reason this vehicle was not removed. Why?
