This is the photo of an eyesore and health hazard in Main Street, Mosta, close to the square. It is full of rats and poses a danger to any adventurous child. Tourists queue for the sightseeing buses close by. The local council and Mepa should do something about it without further delay.

Piggy in the middle

In a country where parking is at a premium, it is unimaginable how people can actually think of getting away with placing an electricity pole bang in the middle of a parking spot. However, that is what has happened in Joe Gasan Street, Pietà. It should be removed immediately.

Take two

Jean De Valette Square in Valletta was opened with so much fanfare a few months back. Yet, parts of it were being dug up with a jackhammer last week to replace some slabs. Why was this needed? Is this not sheer waste of money?

Wrong priorities

Deciding on the order of merit when reporting news is always tricky but was PBS correct in relegating the Norman Vella magisterial decree on Wednesday to the eighth or ninth item during its main 8pm TVM news bulletin? The item was read 15 minutes into the bulletin. And it was not mentioned in the headlines, either.

And then there was light...

It is hoped that Enemalta will finally take action to repair two street lights in Triq ta’ Ġokondu, corner with Triq l-Uqija in Swieqi. These lights have not worked in more than eight weeks and repeated calls to the local council and to Enemalta seem to have fallen on deaf ears.

Distracting supervision

One day last week, a young man could be seen clearing weeds with a mechanical cutter from the Floriana garden overlooking Triq l-Għassara ta’ l-Għeneb, as another two spoke to him and looked on. Were they mere friends keeping him company? Were they co-workers who could do nothing because no other tools were available? Or were they foremen? Whatever, the next day one could notice that there were still a lot of weeds to be cleared.

Own goal

The other day, a DJ was heard explaining during a radio music show that, when possible, he and a colleague have an arrangement to alternate in presenting a particular programme, depending on the time their favourite Italian football team was playing, presumably to watch it. What comes first: loyalty to listeners or to the football idols?

Traffic lights’ timing

The little green man that allows pedestrians to use a zebra crossing usually switches to red a few seconds before the traffic lights turn back from red to green. This gives people crossing the road the chance to get to the other side in time. However, at the park and ride junction in Blata l-Bajda, the lights change at the same time. This anomaly ought to be corrected.

Shameful scene

It is shameful that rubbish had been left accumulating on this corner in Paceville for close to two weeks. This should not happen anywhere, let alone in a prime touristic area.

What a waste

Security requirements must, of course, be met. But why does a police Rapid Intervention Unit car, with two officers inside it, have to be stationed 24/7 outside the Libyan Embassy in Balzan? Couldn’t some other police unit do it or, better still, the Armed Forces of Malta’s C Company? Surely, a police mobile unit could be much more useful elsewhere.
