Back in the 1950s, letters of appointment to civil service posts were delivered by hand by a messenger from the ministry. We were discretely advised to tip this messenger handsomely to show our appreciation.

I was reminded of this by the front page article entitled ‘Canvasser made delivery of €9 million in cheques’, (The Sunday Times of Malta, December 11).

Old habits do indeed die hard.
