I am pleased to hear that a filmed record of the old buses is being produced.

Maybe, just maybe, it could be made into a DVD and be sold to tourists and others as a reminder of the joys and problems of these ancient giants of the road.

I’m sure that some enterprising person could be found to finance the opportunity, especially as the sale of the poor replica buses should now drop off.

I have been coming to Malta for about 25 years and have many photos of the buses going back to when they were green and I had hoped that some would be saved and made into a museum but this opportunity seems to be sinking fast without trace.

A DVD would be a great reminder along with the book The Malta Buses by the late and sadly missed Joe Bonnici and his colleague Michael Cassar. I am not sure if the book is still available but maybe it could be republished to celebrate the passing of an era, whether you liked it or not!

I found them quirky, interesting and nostalgic but did not have to use them every day to go to work or the shops!

It would be such a shame if they all were to meet the scrapyard.

Here in the UK we did the same with steam engines but a wise scrap dealer just left them in a siding and has now sold most at a vast profit to preserved railways. A selection of these buses should be saved before it’s too late. It should not be up to individuals to do this.

If there is not to be a museum of old buses, maybe a DVD could fill the gap and complement an excellent book that has given me hours of pleasure and many fond memories.

Please, Malta, get a museum organised before it’s too late.
