Infrastructure Minister Joe Mizzi has told Parliament that oil exploration in Maltese waters is expected to start in the first quarter of 2014.

Answering questions by Nationalist MP Toni Bezzina, Mr Mizzi said talks had already been held with companies holding licences for exploration and with others interested in government deals for oil exploration, of which there were several.

In view of various developments in the Mediterranean, which were expected to result in more opportunities for oil exploration, the Government was analysing the situation before issuing new licences.
