Many Maltese officials have government vehicles at their disposal. This is correct because many official duties must be accomplished in a narrow timeframe and outside normal hours. Government ministers, the judiciary and the Speaker are to be treated equally. All should receive the use of one vehicle for official business.

However, a second vehicle that is funded by the Government for private use is not acceptable because the private use of any government vehicle will open the doors to misuse.

Maltese officials are, of course, humans too and, therefore, tend to look to their own advantage. Let us not tempt these politicians to misuse the confidence given to them by the electorate.

The private use of a vehicle should be the private responsibility of each person, whether to collect the children from school, fetch the newspaper or do the shopping, and not be the responsibility of the State.
