The number of operations carried out at Mater Dei Hospital rose by 128 in November when compared to the same month of 2010.

Of the 4,022 operations carried out at the hospital, 3,489 were scheduled, while the other 13 per cent where emergency interventions.

Health Minister Joe Cassar commended the “positive result achieved through collective teamwork”.

He said the government was working on reducing waiting time for patients in need of an operation, and while 32,764 operations had been carried out during the last 12 months that St Luke’s Hospital served as the state hospital, more than 40,500 operations were carried out in the first 11 months of 2011.
