It seems the battle of Paola Square is raging on, although I am under the impression that all things have been decided and there is no possibility of turning the clock back.

I still have to see how the trees damage the road.

If damage is being done to an underground reservoir, are we justified in deciding to alter the whole set-up of a square instead of fixing the underground damage of something no one seems to use?

I would leave it to botanists and foresters to judge the possibility of replanting the trees in the same place. I am pleased that the mayor is willing to consider the suggestions made by Front għal Ambjent Aħjar to plant other species of trees.

But this is not the only consideration. We are going to be deprived of trees that have been there for 60 years or more and, so, if you were to plant the same number of new trees it will take another 60 years to have the same effect of the present ones. And we know that the number of new trees is much smaller.

Nonsense dictates that we put the needs of our traffic before the needs of our health. It dictates also to replace natural embellishment with the embellishment of road signs.

A green space is replaced by a grey one, that is, a healthy lung will be replaced by a cancerous one.

You know that benzene is so high in the area of Paola. Isn’t it funny we’re reducing what our health needs most? But the architects seem to reply to that: “Don’t panic, we are building an oncological centre”.
