No travel warning has been issued for Maltese in Libya but the Foreign Ministry is monitoring the situation closely as political chaos persists.
On Tuesday, the US state department warned Americans not to go to Libya and urged those in the country to leave because of growing security concerns.
But a Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said this was not yet warranted for Maltese citizens.
“The situation is very fluid and we are monitoring it closely to take immediate action if the need to evacuate Maltese citizens arises,” she said, adding the Maltese embassy in the Libyan capital Tripoli was still functional.
Libya is in political gridlock as interim Prime Minister Abdullah Al-Thinni and his government have not relinquished power despite the General National Congress approving the cabinet of prime minister-in-waiting Ahmed Maetig.
The friction comes fewer than four weeks away from the election of a new parliament.
At the same time, renegade Libyan general Khalifa Haftar has been leading an armed insurgency against Muslim militants across Libya. Forces loyal to him have over the past two days used jet fighters to bomb militant outposts in Benghazi.
