It is no time for shows. It is not the time for any politician to lead the stage. It is best if all politicians understand in this sober moment that they need to step aside, carry on honestly with their job of government and Opposition and be serious.

The people are obviously suffering in silence. They have been bombed into silence. Not by the Bidnija bomb alone but by other bombs causing the disintegration of our society in front of their very eyes.

The politicians have taken over centre stage of almost every aspect of our lives, leaving us trying to understand how everything works and wondering at their amazing power to do what they like with our country, our economy, our institutions, our parties and many other aspects of our lives.

Daphne Caruana Galizia is not the only one to have been bombed. The Maltese public has been bombed successively and left open-mouthed at the blatancy of many things that are happening around us. So much of it is happening that the people prefer to give up and get on with their lives. Almost like a struggle for survival and self-defence; if you cannot understand it, then accept it and don’t challenge it.

This week we have been forced into this mindset and we now run the danger of being forced into submission leaving Daphne’s targets to play freely at the expense of our right to having the country that we want.

We do not need politicians to lead us during this moment of deep sadness; a moment of void, a traumatic moment of post-amputation of an important part of our societal body.

Daphne was more liked than disliked.  She was more of a buoy to many than a journalist. She was the only source of truth and objectivity. She had become the automatic place to reach out in our laptops. She broke many hit records. She was imperfect but so what and who is not? We now need to be left alone to think and mourn this loss. We do not need politicians or actors to interrupt our deep sense of loss and mourning and I plead with politicians to get on with their work and this time let independent experts freely do their job. Let the independent and diverse media work and collaborate with the investigating experts, freely, without boundaries and without the secrecy symptomatic of the corridors of power God knows for what motives.

We need all the silence that we can have in order to reflect on the great seriousness of our loss. Friends to take the important leafs from the lost book and carry on bearing the standard. Foes to open their minds and hearts to what the lost one had to say in her quest for truth.
