A truck driver who tipped a load of cement bricks onto a main road in Xemxija is expected to be charged with littering and driving with an unsecured load after a police sergeant who was passing by took the driver’s details and issued charges.

Had there been a motorcyclist on the other lane, he would have been done for

The man who reported the incident on Facebook, Alex Hilton, said three police officers who drove through the road 10 minutes after the incident, when the man was still clearing up the bricks, failed to stop.

This, said Mr Hilton, was despite the fact he had specifically warned the emergency services that the load was unsecured and the driver was likely to keep going without strapping down the bricks.

However, the police said their car did stop and the sergeant took the driver's details.

In fact, half an hour later he saw the same truck driver go on his way undaunted.

“The incident happened, fine, but the driver could have at least learnt from his mistake and strapped the bricks on more securely. It’s pure luck that no one was hurt. This was a lucky escape, because had there been a motorcyclist on the other lane, he would have been done for,” he said, when contacted.

“Safety doesn’t seem to be of concern to a lot of people here, and this can be seen on the roads on a daily basis.”
