Alternattiva Demokratika chairman Arnold Cassola expressed disappointment yesterday that an EU summit had failed to mention the real solution to Malta’s irregular migration situation – the drastic reform of the Dublin II convention.
The convention currently stipulates that migrants may only apply for asylum in the country they land in.
“The egoism of the PPE and Socialist prime ministers knows no bounds. A good number of them just do not care about responsibility and burden sharing and changing the Dublin convention. Thus Malta is being left in the lurch,” he said.
Prof. Cassola said it was, however, positive that EU leaders at Friday’s summit accepted to tie the 38-point immigration action plan to timeframes to be indicated by the European Commission.
