A Croatian man who admitted to trying to steal items from a shop in Sliema has been given a suspended jail term.

Goran Milanovic, 34, pleaded guilty to the attempted theft of a pair of shoes and trousers, worth around €80, from Zara on Friday at about 4pm.

He was stopped by the security officer after the alarm went off as he tried to leave the building. He ran away but was later caught by the police. Defence lawyer Leontine Calleja said her client had fully cooperated with the police.

Dr Calleja also indicated Mr Milanovic had not taken any items from the shop.

Also, he was leaving the island later this week.

Magistrate Doreen Clarke sentenced him to two months in jail suspended for a year.
