After yet another spell of exciting races at Spa-Francorchamps and Monza, where we witnessed sheer speed at its best, the F1 circus heads away from Europe to the more technical circuits in Singapore, South Korea, Japan, India, Brazil and Abu Dhabi.

The two concepts introduced this year, DRS (Drag Reduction System) and KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System), have contributed to the speed and to more overtaking manoeuvres, especially when tailing another driver down a straight within a second time gap.

However, this is not always easy. Lewis Hamilton might have just overcooked it in Belgium hunting down Kamui Kobayashi and in Monza it was Hamilton again who thrilled the crowds, this time chasing Michael Schumacher.

The upcoming races will be slower, more technical and the weather will be an interesting variable.

Back on track, the teams will be operating from “bunkers” and crammed conditions from now on, the luxury and multi-floor motor homes will be reduced to one room offices, meeting rooms and dining rooms.

The motor homes headed to their respective team factories after Monza to be stripped down and await new paintwork and new sponsors. These multi-million-euro mobile stations are an attraction in themselves and they take just a few days to be set up. The Red Bull station, for example, takes around 35 trucks to transport and in Monte Carlo it is floated into place on a massive barge.

Drivers seem to be in place already for the 2012 season. Bruno Senna told me he was compiling enough sponsorship to allow him climb back into the driving seat at Lotus Renault. In 2012 there will be only one Lotus team after Team Lotus agreed to change their name to Caterham.

The next race in Singapore will be a turning point, with Sebastian Vettel on course to win his second grand prix championship title, making him the youngest double back-to-back F1 world champion ever.

Red Bull are charging towards a second constructors’ title and their 2012 car is already on the drawing board.
