Newly-crowned Division Two champions Żebbuġ Rangers continued with their triumphant march this season when they had the better of St Patrick 3-1 at the ground in St Paul’s Bay.

Rangers are now leading the standings on 56 points... a massive 13 points clear of St George’s and Msida St Joseph who are engaged in a tight race to secure the runners-up spot.

Last weekend, both St George’s and Msida registered comfortable victories over Mellieħa (3-1) and Mġarr United (5-0) to remain tied on 43 points.

Fourth-placed Żurrieq had the better of Pembroke 2-1 to remain two ponts behind while San Ġwann stayed in the hunt for one of the four promotion slots after downing lowly Sta Venera 2-0.

Żebbuġ took the lead on 15 minutes when from a corner, Miguel Francica headed past St Patrick goalkeeper Juergen Borg.

Rangers remained the better side and Mauricio Rodrigues Britto went close to a second goal on 37 minutes but his free-kick finished just over the bar.

Borg came to the Saints’ rescue on 40 minutes when tipping over Lee James Agius’s powerful drive.

Żebbuġ were awarded a penalty just before the break for a handling infringement inside the St Patrick penalty area.

Rodrigues Britto saw his first effort blocked by Borg but from the rebound, the Żebbuġ forward tapped the ball home.

St Patrick pulled one back six minutes after the restart when Jean Claude Cesare surprised keeper Grech with a shot from the distance.

However, Żebbug made sure of the points late on when from a fast break Rodrigues Britto served John Nwoba who beat Borg from close in to make it 3-1.
