Malta’s U-17 team ended their commitments in the UEFA qualification tournament (Group 9) on a poor note after going down 2-0 to Iceland at the Centenary Stadium yesterday.

After identical 2-1 defeats to Norway and Portugal in their first two outings, the Maltese boys were hoping to avoid bottom place in the four-team standings by beating the erstwhile winless Iceland but it was the latter who had the final say.

Kristinn Sigurjonsson opened the scoring after 12 minutes and Eggert Tómasson converted a penalty close to the half-hour mark to give Iceland their first victory in three games.

Norway won the tournament after edging Portugal 1-0 at the National Stadium. Iver Fossum struck Norway’s winner in first-half stoppage time.

Final standings: Norway 9 points; Portugal 6; Iceland 3; Malta 0.
