St George’s 0
San Ġwann 0
St George’s and San Ġwann took a point each in a drab match at the Centenary Stadium yesterday.
Neither side will be happy with the final result as they remained anchored at the bottom end of the standings.
St George’s dominated the first 45 minutes as they pegged their opponents into their own half.
On 12 minutes, an Emerson Amaira back header from a Neil Falzon free-kick finished just over.
Two minutes later Timmy Thomas was foiled by Matthew Grech who saved from close range when the striker was put clear.
The Cottonera side kept up the pressure and on 27 minutes Ayuba had his effort deflected for a corner following a Nomel pass. From the resulting corner, Hubert Vella drove the ball high and wide.
At last San Ġwann threatened on 38 minutes.
Felix Udoh headed just wide from a Jan Tanti cross.
The Saints improved their play in the second half and started to venture forward. On the hour Shawn Vella curled the ball into the top corner but Uwadia was on hand to clear the ball away.
Three minutes a Tanti cross-shot was saved by Sean Vella.
On 76 minutes St George’s suffered a severe setback when Vella was sent off after receiving a second yellow card.
San Ġwann could have snatched it two minutes into injury time when substitute Nezar Abouhaisa flicked the ball on to the crossbar as both teams settled for a point.
