The government is resisting calls to disclose the remuneration package and perks received by senior Malta Enterprise officials appointed without a call for applications being made.

With the exception of the deputy chairman and Malta Industrial Parks CEO Joshua Zammit, all posts were given to former Labour Party officials.

Questions sent by Times of Malta several weeks ago remained unanswered.

The issue was also raised recently in Parliament when Opposition MP Chris Said tabled a number of written questions.

Economy Minister Chris Cardona said former Labour secretary-general Jimmy Magro was employed in a position of trust as head of an agency overseeing capital projects such as the Life Sciences Park.

The most qualified person was chosen

Questions about his salary package were not answered.

Mr Magro, who also sits on the Water Services Corporation board, has just been appointed as a special consultant on EU funds by the Local Councils Association.

Former Labour education secretary Aleks Farrugia was also handed a top post in the State entity, this time as head of communications of Malta Enterprise.

The minister said that his recruitment was carried out according to public service procedures and the most qualified person was chosen.

This newspaper reported that no call had been issued and Mr Farrugia was directly selected from Part 3 of the Employment Register, which is reserved for people in employment seeking an alternative job.

The same recruitment procedure was followed for the appointment of Joe Borg, a former Alfred Sant aide who has been at the helm of Business First since February 13.

Mr Borg served as personal assistant to Dr Sant when he was prime minister between 1996 and 1998.

Again, no specific information was given on his remuneration package, except that this was in line with the post of chief officer at Malta Enterprise.
