Għajnsielem FC are the new champions in Gozo after beating Xewkija Tigers 3-2 in a pulsating decider that required extra-time to determine a winner at a packed Gozo Stadium.

It has been ten years since the last time the Blacks were the top team in the GFA league but yesterday they had good reason to celebrate after ending their drought at the expense of the outgoing champions.

Għajnsielem led the standings for almost the entire season but lost their last two matches as the Tigers pounced to cancel a six-point deficit and force a title play-off.

Shaun Bajada and Joseph Vella gave Għajnsielem a 2-0 lead before Chris Camilleri (penalty) pulled one back and Daniel Bogdanovic drew the teams level on 86 minutes.

Franklin Vella (Għajnsielem) and Joseph Cefai (Xewkija) were sent off on 75 minutes.

The Blacks also had Charlie Hili red carded in normal time but striker Jean Pierre Mifsud Triganza was on the right spot to score the Għajnsielem winner on 116 minutes.

The weekend before, Xewkija had beaten Għajnsielem 2-0 in the GFA Cup final.
