An earth tremor was felt in Malta early yesterday afternoon and recorded by the Seismic Monitoring and Research Unit of the University of Malta.

It is believed to have been caused by a 4.9 magnitude earthquake some 58km deep near Crotone in southern Italy. No damage was caused in Italy or Malta.

Meanwhile, the tremor felt in Malta at around 10.08pm on Friday was due to a magnitude 5.7 earthquake 110km below the earth’s surface with an epicentre in the sea just off southern Greece. The deep earthquake posed no risk of generating a tsunami.

From reports on the SMRU online questionnaire, the tremor was felt mainly in the eastern and central parts of Malta. These mostly reported a “trembling” and some rattling of doors and windows but no damage was caused.

People who felt the earthquake are encouraged to report their experience on http://seismic.research.um.edu.mt .
