Iconic arena Madison Square Garden will get a new indoor athletics meeting, after the departure of the Millrose Games for another venue, USA Track and Field said.

“Track and Field will return to the country’s premier sports and entertainment venue for the 99th year on January 28,” USA Track and Field said in announcing the new US Open meeting to kick off the 2012 Championship Series.

Bernard Lagat is slated to headline the field in the men’s mile, the federation said, noting that the US Open will be the first athletics meeting to be held in Madison Square Garden since the start of the arena’s top-to-bottom, three-year refurbishment.
