Elena Grech

Elena Grech is the new head of the European Commission Representation in Valletta.

Ms Grech has over 20 years of practice in diplomatic and European affairs and is now head of unit at the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Regional and Urban Policy in Brussels. She will take up her office in Malta on January 1

She has a degree of doctor of laws from the University of Malta and a diploma of notary public.

Dr Grech joined the Commission in 2007, serving as a legal officer in the Commission’s internal market department dealing with compliance with the EU’s public procurement legislation, with particular responsibility for Malta and Italy. She was also involved in the green public procurement policy.

She served in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Valletta between 1995 and 2006. She was posted in the Embassy of Malta in Bonn and in the Permanent Representation of Malta to the EU in Brussels.

In this role she formed part of the team responsible for the negotiations leading to Malta’s accession to the EU.
