Plans to have a seafarer centre next to the Chapel of Our Lady of Liesse in Valletta have been unveiled.

The building is currently used by the chaplain and will serve as a rest house for seafarers.

It will be manned by the Apostolate of the Sea which administers the chapel, the International Transport Federation and Transport Malta.

The project is being carried out in collaboration with the Grand Harbour Regeneration Corporation which will be taking care of the embellishment works.

He said that in recent years interest in seafaring and maritime careers had dropped considerably, to the point that not enough qualified people were being found.

This was to the detriment of the Maltese economy.
