Members of the Indian community ushered in a new beginning with their Maltese friends over the weekend after weeks of preparation for the Diwali grand ball.

The ancient Hindu festival signifying victory of light over darkness was officially celebrated on October 23 with cheerful prayer to Lakshmi Mata, Goddess of Wealth, but on Saturday the community got together to share the tradition with their friends.

The event, attended by some 250 people and organised by the Maltese Indian Community for the past 30 years, was a way of breaking down barriers and revealing that India was more than what was shown on TV, according to one of the organisers.
