The Youth FA has just added another competition to its repertoire for next season – a championship for U-13 teams.

The rules governing the new league will be identical to those of the U-15 and U-17 competitions.

The decision was taken after long hours of discussions and studies on a pilot project which took place at the Luxol Ground with the assistance of the Technical Centre at the Malta FA.

Fr Hilary Tagliaferro, Youth FA president, is looking with enthusiasm at this new competition.

During a meeting for officials and club delegates, held recently, he declared openly that it brings nostalgia of his younger days, when he first introduced the Inħobb il-football festivals, back in the 1980s.

Fr Hilary showed his gratitude to the Malta FA whose collaboration, investment and dedication to the grassroot levels was enabling more youngsters to play the game.

“There’s so many people to thank but we must also not forget the Referees Board,” he said.

“They are going to supply us with officials for U-13 matches.

“Their contribution is so much appreciated, particularly ex-FIFA referees who are willing to pass on their experience and knowledge to the young players and assist them in the transition from fun festivals to competitive football.”

Malta FA president Norman Darmanin Demajo said he was sure that the new U-13 competition will be a success and that it will enhance the level of the game.

“This will be a perfect opportunity for our young footballers to show more respect to the laws of the game, the referees, coaches, opponents and fair play in general,” he said.
