Labour won’t work… the Nationalist Party doesn’t work… A new Catholic Green party could work!

As a reader of The Times and a resident I read every day about some new scandal. Many scandals (energy, waste disposal, trees, tobacco influence, car parks, hospitals, bus service, roads, etc.) illustrate how influential individuals lead people around by their noses!

The Maltese mentality was greatly influenced by foreign rulers. The Maltese have always most successfully adapted themselves to the situation. Today, the people rule themselves and cannot blame a foreign ruler for mistakes or shortcomings.

The winner-takes-all effect after elections is a fact of political life and hinders the best government and civil service. After so many scandals, people could lose confidence in the system and be tempted to look for their personal advantage.

It seems the ruling forces have lost touch with the people. For instance, existing parties have not grasped how important green politics are to the survival of Malta. Both of them have allowed the Green card to be played by others.

A new group of MPs (Noel Farrugia and Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando, The Times, October 22) has possibly understood the future importance of Green politics.

Green is neither left nor right. Green parties have been very successful in the rest Europe. A small new third force could make certain that promises made before an election are kept and that the implementation of a greener policy is to the advantage of all on the islands. Are the Maltese ripe for change?
