This is the shambles of an entrance to one of the two underground emergency flour mills that were built during the 1950s at Buskett, limits of Tar-Robba. These mills were built secretly and attended by a watchman till 1979. Although they are identical to the other six mills around the island (plus one in Gozo), this site is quite a unique one as its long entrance splits into a Y shape and leads into two underground chambers (one mill on each side).

The front gate has iron bars missing and on top of this site there are large air vents that at present are covered by pieces of wood and scrap iron. The vents are about 10 metres deep and pose an extreme hazard, especially to picnickers.

More than 12 years ago, the Siġġiewi local council took over this place and since then nothing had been done. About three years ago, the Malta Environment and Planning Authority scheduled these two mills together with the one in Xemxija. Can the Siġġiewi council tell the public about its plans for such a historical monument?

A video on the Xemxija underground mill can be seen on You Tube.
