Naxxar Lions appear to have secured a boost ahead of their opening BOV Premier League match against Floriana on Saturday after agreeing terms to sign defender Louis Cutajar.

Cutajar is still something of an unknown quantity for the Premier League but his call-up to the Malta Under-21 squad earlier this year alerted a number of local clubs.

Floriana were thought to be in pole position to acquire Cutajar but the scenario changed during the weekend when Naxxar revived their interest in the former Norwich youth player.

It seems that the Lions’ bold pitch persuaded Cutajar, 20, to take on the challenge of trying to help the club retain their status following promotion as at the end of last season.

Naxxar were eager to conclude talks with Cutajar before he joined up with the U-21 squad that travelled to Hungary yesterday ahead of tomorrow’s friendly match.

Cutajar’s call-up to the Malta Under-21 squad had captured the attention of the media in his home town in England as the youngster came to Ray Farrugia’s attention after impressing a scout while playing five-a-side football during a holiday here back in September.

“Norfolk warehouse worker went on holiday to Malta... and got scouted for their national football team!” was the headline of the EDP24 website report on Cutajar’s Under-21 call-up.

Now Cutajar is hoping to rekindle his dream of a professional career by establishing himself with the Malta U-21 team as well proving himself in the country’s top flight with newcomers Naxxar Lions.
