Lino Bugeja’s article in The Times (December 21), asserts that the European Union deserves the award of the 2012 Nobel Peace Prize.

He fails to mention Nato, which was formed before the Common Market, the forerunner of the EU, and was instrumental in keeping the peace during the Cold War.

Since then, it was Nato that went to help in the Balkans, as Bosnia and Kosovo would no doubt confirm.

If any organisation deserved the award for keeping peace in Europe it was Nato and certainly not the EU.
