The Nationalist Party was hit by a garnishee order of €13,400 last month after its mobile phone arm failed to pay administrative fees.

The garnishee order filed by the Malta Communications Authority covered payments owed by Ping, the PN’s mobile phone subsidiary run by media.link communications, as far back as 2011.

A party spokesman yesterday said the garnishee order was expected to be withdrawn tomorrow after an agreement was reached with the MCA. He did not elaborate.

Court documents showed that in January the authority sent an official letter to the PN requesting payment. Another letter followed in February.

In the only letter from a bank attached to the documents, APS said it froze media.link funds but the amount was insufficient to even cover the expenses involved. As a result the bank informed the court registrar it could not deposit the funds in court.

A second garnishee order was also filed by Integrated Electronics, a private company that was requesting payment of €376 for supplies.

The garnishee orders have added to the PN’s post-electoral woes after party employees were informed of the organisation’s precarious financial situation on March 28.

Employees were paid their March wages late as the party and its media arm struggled with a massive cash flow problem. The 150 workers were paid on April 14, although bonuses and overtime were withheld.

PN secretary general Paul Borg Olivier had insisted that despite the cash flow problem, the party had a strong asset base and was even considering the sale of some of its clubs.
