The Malta Triathlon National Championships, sponsored by Kee Klamp, will take place this Sunday at Salina.

Starting at 8 a.m., the race will be held on the Olympic distance of 1.5km swim, 30km cycle and a 10k run.

A sprint distance race, consisting of a 705m swim, 20k cycle and 5k run, will also be held on Sunday. The sprint distance is not valid for the National Championships and national team selection.

Over 60 triathletes have confirmed their participation, including foreign entries from England, Wales, Ireland, Spain, Denmark and Japan.

The women’s race promises to be a keenly-contested affair with Danica Bonello Spiteri (St Patrick’s AC) defending her title, which she has won 10 times.

Her main rivals are Michelle Vella Wood and Johanna Calleja (Birkirkara St Joseph) with Hannah Pace and Margaret Seguna tipped as potential challengers after a string of encouraging performances throughout the summer season.

With last year’s winner, Dermot Galea, out of the reckoning, Keith Galea (Birkirkara St Joseph), Rudolph Agius (Birkirkara St Joseph) and Fabio Spiteri (St Patrick’s) are expected to fight for the men’s title.

Throughout the race, the Salina Coast Road will be closed from 7.30 to 11 a.m. Non-participating cyclists will not be allowed on the Coast Road to ensure maximum safety for the competing triathletes.
