Napoli were robbed of a place in the Champions League last 16 despite beating Premier League leaders Arsenal 2-0 at a half-empty San Paolo last night.

Gonzalo Higuain scored the first for Napoli in the 73rd minute as the hosts came to life after a dismal opening hour which Arsenal con-trolled without looking like scoring.

Jose Callejon scored in injury time for Napoli but it was not enough.

Borussia Dortmund’s 87th-minute goal to beat Marseille 2-1 meant all three teams finished on 12 points in Group F but Napoli missed out on head-to-head records.

It was the 14th season in a row that Arsenal, who had captain Mikel Arteta sent off for a second bookable offence in the 76th minute, have reached the last 16.

Dortmund defender Kevin Grosskreutz scored late on to keep last year’s losing finalists in the competition.

Souleymane Diawara cancelled out Robert Lewandowski’s early opener as bottom club Marseille looked set to snatch their first point in the group stage.

Milan, the only Italian team left in the competition, squeezed into the knockout phase after a battling 0-0 draw with Ajax despite playing for more than an hour with 10 men following Riccardo Montolivo’s sending off.

Ajax dominated even before Montolivo was shown a straight red card for a reckless challenge on Christian Poulsen, but Massimi-liano Allegri’s side held on to secure their place in the last 16.

They finish second in Group H with nine points, a point ahead of Ajax and four behind group winners Barcelona, who beat Celtic 6-1.

Poulsen hit the post for Ajax after five minutes and Milan goalkeeper Christian Abbiati was forced into a number of fine saves, but the Dutch side couldn’t capitalise on their territorial advantage and have to content themselves with a place in the Europa League.

Neymar finally showed the goalscoring touch he has been threatening with a hat-trick as Barcelona shrugged off their recent dip in form after ripping through Celtic at the Nou Camp.

Meanwhile, Chelsea made sure they will go into next week’s draw as group winners with a routine 1-0 victory over Steaua Bucharest.

Demba Ba marked a rare starting berth to bundle in Chelsea’s opener after 11 minutes at Stamford Bridge and Jose Mourinho’s side spent most of the rest of the match in third gear against the Romanian side who finished bottom of Group E.

Victory left Chelsea top of the group with 12 points, two more than Schalke.

The German side powered into the knockout stage with a 2-0 win over 10-man Basel, helped by a fine goal from Julian Draxler and a clear offside effort from Joel Matip.

The Germans took a deserved lead in the 51st minute through 20-year-old Draxler after dominating from the start and needing victory to advance from Group E.

They were lucky to have had their second goal count, however, with at least four Schalke players clearly in offside position when Matip slotted in from close range to seal the win and relieve some of the pressure on coach Jens Keller.

Elsewhere, Porto will have to settle for a place in Europe’s second-tier club competition after their Champions League campaign ended with a 2-0 defeat at Group G winners Atletico Madrid.

Zenit St Petersburg lost 4-1 at Austria Vienna in the other match in the group but the Russians went through to the last 16 in second place behind Atletico.
