The Nadur Primary School Ekoskola Committee was chosen to participate in the third edition of the HSBC School-Community Climate Change project.

The committee, formed by schoolchildren elected by the children themselves, parents and volunteers, was awarded €950 for a number of projects.

The committee created an action plan using the Seven Steps of the Ekoskola empowerment process.

The plan included the purchase of a new reverse osmosis plant to cut down the use of plastic bottles by more than 90 per cent.

Another initiative was the holding of a Happy Healthy Lunch Workshop, whereby a nutritionist explained the typical healthy lunch for schoolchildren to parents.

The activity was followed by a lunch workshop, where the food prepared was given to children who also had a follow-up presentation on a healthy lifestyle.

A mini-London Olympic Games 2012 for students was held at the Nadur Youngsters football pitch. Parents were also invited to participate in a fitness course held during school hours.

To reduce emissions which are having a negative impact on our climate, the committee is urging children to use public transport and wherever possible to go to school on foot.
