Nadur Youngsters trounced neighbours Xagħra United 4-0 to maintain their winning run in the GFA Division One and open a nine-point lead at the top of the standings.

Coming from a positive result, Xagħra were looking to add more points to their tally to move away from the red zone.

Despite having Milos Stojanovic and Anthony Portelli missing due to suspension, Nadur produced a fine all-round display to stave off their opponents’ challenge.

The Blues had their best scoring opportunity on 15 minutes when a free-kick by Jason Portelli was stopped by Nadur keeper Mark Grima with the aid of the bar.

After Josef Buttigieg opened the scoring on 27 minutes, Nadur doubled their lead five minutes from half-time when Charles Hili hit home from close in.

Xagħra tried to push more men forward after the break but conceded more space to the Nadur strikers.

A lob by Antunes came off the Xagħra upright but the Youngsters increased their lead on 64 minutes thanks to a Saviour Attard goal following an Alex Simoncic free-kick.

Xagħra keeper Matthew Vella added to his team’s woes when he was sent off for handling the ball outside the area. From the free-kick, stand-in keeper Joseph Vella was unable to hold Simoncic’s shot and from the rebound, Antunes made it 4-0.

Second-placed Kerċem Ajax had lost further ground on the leaders as they were held to a 1-1 draw by relegation strugglers SK Victoria Wanderers.

The Wanderers took the lead through Eric Nkwankwo but Kerċem replied soon after with an Ian Xuereb equaliser.

The two teams adopted a cautious approach for the rest of the match and actions on goal became very rare.

Late on, Kerċem’s Jean Paul Mizzi had his attempt stopped in style by goalkeeper Giacomo Ratto and seconds from the final whistle, Victoria’s Eman Bugeja had a good effort finishing just wide.

Last weekend, Xewkija Tigers beat bottom side Sannat Lions 3-2.

Xewkija raced into a deserved three-goal advantage through William Cassar (37) and a brace by Thiago Dos Santos (43, 55).

But Sannat hit back to reduce the deficit after an own goal by Manwel Xerri and scored again on the stroke of time with a Patrick Camilleri goal.

However, there was no time left for the Lions to save the match.

Division Two

Mid-table side St Lawrence Spurs inflicted a huge 8-0 defeat on bottom-placed Għarb Rangers last week with early goals from Ryan Farrugia and Jason Theuma putting the Saints on their way.

After the break, Josef Debrincat hit four goals in quick succession and St Lawrence added two more for good measure through Jonathan Micallef and Ryan Farrugia for a resounding victory.

In another match, Għajnsielem consolidated third place with a 4-1 win over Żebbuġ Rovers.

Żebbuġ showed the better qualities in the initial stages and took a deserved lead through Sylvan Galea.

However, the Blacks staged a strong reaction and turned the match in their favour with goals from Damon Hili (23), Joseph Attard (36), Jonathan Grech (44) and Jason Vella (54).
